Moonglow....come light the way up to my window....
Starlight, Electric Light Orchestra/Jeff Lynne
Moonglow....
A later start, now ive counted the Nightingales, 5 singing today, I can relax a bit more....though, sadly, the Mute Swans cant....a Tawny Owl called from the distance...
Mute Swan egg
I found the remains of this egg by Island Pit.....there were 3 Mandarin Ducks present on the island...always worth a look....
Talking of Nightingale....seems like one of them has decided to move...!!….and the last count I had was 17....which is pretty significant...it is estimated that the singing male population across the south east is somewhere between 5000 and 5900....with a loss of around 90% over the last 50 years as they have gradually retreated south....therefore assuming the population at 5500....100% / 5500 = 0.0181818 recurring per bird, therefore 0.30909% of the population is at Whetsted...doesn't seem like much when you put it that way....but if the retreat should continue Whetsted may become an ever more important statistic...
It seemed like it was going to turn out nice again.....but this was early on and the cloud soon started rolling in....
The usual songsters were around.....Whitethroat, Blackcap, Willow Warbler, Garden Warbler....though a total lack of Lesser Whitethroat....!
Three Swift were over Middle Pit and soon joined by 3 House Martin and 3 Swallows.....
There was plenty of Cuckoo action today.....there must have been 4 again around the site....plenty of Cuckoo-ing and bubbling.....the most impressive bubbling sound today was at West Pit with two birds doing a few fly-by's.....
The Lapwing were at West Pit and very wary though I couldn't locate any chicks but clearly they mus be around....a Grey Wagtail and a Pied Wagtail were at the pit as well.....
Plenty of Woodpigeon, Stock Dove, Crows, Magpies, Jackdaws.....
I searched for Turtle Dove but no luck for me, but im sure its just a matter of time....however....I was sent this great pic by MA a few days ago from the West Pit area....
Turtle Dove
A Nuthatch called from the quarry area...
Lastly....theres plenty of Hop Trefoil in most places...but usually over looked....
