Something this way comes...in the dark!!

One of lifes carnivores arrives at the moth trap....

European Hornet, Vespa crabro

European Hornet, Vespa crabro

These are huge, comparative to other insects of course, carnivores.  Probably that 'Jaws' moment for anything even slightly smaller!  These you do not want in the moth trap creating merry hell!!  This one was sat on the trap yesterday morning.  I have seen them before, including on my trap, so im hoping this is a one off visit and that it wont go off and find some friends to bring round the next time the trap is out!

In the moth trap, rather than on it...

...this rather beautiful moth....if it was a butterfly im sure everyone would oooh and aaah over the vibrancy of its colours....so why does it fly in the dark?....do they have amazingly good eyesight to view these colours....?

Beautiful Golden Y, Autographa pulchrina

...and finally, lets play the generation game.....hope you are all playing at home (for those that are as old as me and remember)....

Brimstone, Opisthograptis luteolata
...and second generation....
