Chris Packham is a marmite man....you either love him or hate him....I rarely find anyone in between....me, I love him....I like the way he talks about stuff and I like his enthusiasm....and I like the way he stood in front of our fellow Europeans recently trying to defy them shooting migrating birds....for that alone he gets the 'bloody hell you fool, well done' medal.....
I was listening to Radio 4 today and he was talking about Vultures...African Vultures....and their drastic decline....
Apparently they are being poisoned so fast that, as they have a slow breeding rate, they will never keep up with the destruction of their species....in fact they have declined so rapidly that few other birds can compete with it...if thats what we should call it....competition to become extinct...at the hands of man of course....
They are now poisoned in large numbers in one go...thanks to Elephant poachers....once the poachers have killed their Elephant and taken what they want, rather than allow the Vultures to show where the bodies lay, they use highly toxic poisons ton the body of the Elephant thereby killing the Vultures very quickly....some with food still in their beaks.....

I'm middle of the road in respect of Packham. He is undoubtedly a highly knowledgeable conservationist who could be the Jeremy Clarkson of conservation if he was given his own programme about British wildlife and allowed to speak up about the injustices of concern in British wildlife today.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately he has allowed himself to be teamed up with the other two idiots on Spring/Autumnwatch, a programme that is rarely controversial, never mentions the unpleasant actions that take place in conservation such as pest controls, a programme more suited for the pre-teens.
I would imagine that the Radio 4 programme was good because you heard the true Chris Packham, not acting as one of The Three Stooges on Springwatch.
