0450 - 0730 cool to cold, overcast, eventually drizzle NW f2-4
Brrr....I bet some of them there birds are wondering what the hell they are doing here....!?
But I know.what they are doing here....entertaining me endlessly is what they are doing here!!
A cold morning mind.....funny old week...t-shirt and shorts a few days back have given way to a winter jumper....or am I just getting old...? That was rhetorical...no need for a response, I know what it is...grumpy and old....and cold this morning....
Initially just Robin, Blackbird and Nightingale for company as it was still rather gloomy...one could say dark...of sorts....3 being a crowd they were soon joined...
Cuckoo, Wren, Woodpigeon, Song Thrush, Goldcrest, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Crow, Jackdaw, Dunnock, Magpie, Treecreeper, Green Woodpecker, Skylark, Chaffinch, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Reed Bunting, Long Tail Tit, Linnet, Yellowhammer, Stock Dove, Mistle Thrush, Feral Pigeon.
....and on the water....
Mallard, Coot, Canada Geese, Moorhen, Mute Swan (4 having a right ding-dong on one of the pits), Great Crested Grebe, Little Egret, Tufted Duck, Greylag Geese, 3 Mandarin Duck, Little Grebe.
And...the Warbler count of course...
Nightingale 15....13 on site, though this, I believe, will be proven to be 14...2 others off site
Whitethroat 15
Lesser Whitethroat 4
Blackcap 10
Willow Warbler 2
Chiffchaff 30
Reed Warbler 3+
Sedge Warbler 6+
It wasnt a full walk round due to the drizzle, which although was light, was trending to wanting to be more persistent....of course, it stopped when I got home...! So not a full count...and in places many of the birds were quiet too.
Now that the Reed and Sedge Warblers have arrived in force they have spilled over to the fringes of at least one of the other pits (most of them are located at the Western end of the site, the overspill tends to be more Eastern end)....and its now a bit difficult to count them...access to the main site isnt great....anyway, numbers are there....which is good...!!
