The Blues

Just when every ray of hope was gone.....
I should have known that you would come along....
My Old Friend the Blues, Steve Earle

With a real up and down Summer, thats just about over in the world of nature.....Autumn presses on with the urgency to get the last bit done......moth trapping has been...er....somewhat lack-lustre to be honest....the catches have been small, the amount of times the trap has been out has been minimal with the well below average temperatures, the on off rain and wind....so I suppose it comes as no surprise then that this moth wasnt in the trap...it was in the kitchen the other day....and I do believe its a new one for me, most pleasing.....

Ni Moth, Trichoplusia ni

Now for the blues.....lovely....

Common Blue, Polyommatus icarus

Holly Blue, Celestrina argiolus

....both in the garden today...and very nice it was to see them....

Meanwhile...another venture of mine...bird ringing...has been suffering as well...again due to the weather.  Mostly a weekend activity for me, as for most ringers I guess, the weekends of late have been either too windy....or rainy...or windy and rainy......so I was determined to get out and have a go at some Autumnal migrants.

Im not really sure my Summer/Autumn ringing site is that suited for a surge of migrants, being part of an orchard...still...you never know...so yesterday I went and re-cut the rides after nearly two months off (so I missed a lot of the breeding time)....

Today I managed to get a reasonable number of birds, for this site anyway....and two that I wasnt really expecting.  Garden Warbler, Sylvia borin (no picture, sorry)....and this one...

Lesser Whitethroat, Sylvia curruca

These are really groovy birds.  I love the rattly song...but in the hand, as all birds do, they take on a fabulous appeal....what a smashing little bird....

Neither of these Sylvia warblers breed around the orchard that I have been able to tell so they are clearly on the move.  Im not surprised.  The last week or so has certainly felt most Autumnal in the mornings.

Some birds get to have more than one go at raising a family....but heres a juvenile that never ceases to please...

Robin, Erithacus rubicula

....and whilst ringing today 6 Buzzards passed over.....
