Whetsted and cold!

0920 - 1120 bright, some cloud, cold W f1-4

Brrrrrr!!  In the sunshine out of the wind it was hot, in the wind it was c-c-c-c-c-cold....couldn't get the clothing right for both....doh!....

Originally I was going to go to Bough Beech to look for some bird over there....but I decided the easier trip to Whetsted....10 minutes compared to half an hour....was the better bet...and it turned out to be a good decision....

...cold start....

A fine start to the walk with a number of Redwing in the paddocks....definitely a Redwing day as no Fieldfare found....

More work is being undertaken on the concrete apron as they stock up with road finings, the pile grows ever larger and the first small pit is now unapproachable if they are working there.

Anyway...moving along several Bullfinches, as usual were around...Jays, Magpies, Crows, Woodpigeons....several Buzzards were busy hunting around and in the process upsetting a good number of pigeons with flocks between 20 and 100 being scattered from trees.

Along the straight, in the Alders, a few Goldfinches were joined by a Blue Tit and 5 Lesser Redpolls with one male looking amazingly blush pink already....what a joy.

On the pits 2 Mandarin Ducks flew off calling, a Little Grebe was present and 3 Mute Swans have returned.  2 Little Egrets were posing but not fishing along with several Grey Herons.

The 2 female Goldeneyes remain on middle pit, today hanging out with 2 male Tufted Ducks.

A Common Gull and Herring Gull were on middle pit along with about 30 Black-headed Gulls.

A fantastic total of 44 Teal were on island pit.  The most I have seen on site at any time.  54 Shoveler and 17 Pochard were also around.

My first Kingfisher of the year appeared briefly before skimming off and way.

As I returned the almost annual event occurred....Lapwings...approximately 90 of them.  Great.

A great visit!!
