Its nice to know that the sceptical look that birders give other birders appears to be universal....
At Marquenterre there are several hides, in each is a 'guide' to help with bird identification and assistance in seeing the birds as each has a scope for people to use. I'm not sure if there is a hierarchy, but there seem to be several different coloured jackets.....anyway....as I approached one of the hides a Whitethroat gave its itchy / scratchy song....and then again...this attracted the 'guide' from within the hide....she seemed somewhat unsure which warbler it was, so I tried telling her it was a Whitethroat...she seemed somewhat confused and muttered about looking for it and meandered off. I had already jotted it down and was in the hide....
After a few minutes I decided to move on as the hides can get a bit busy....exiting, she was coming back....Common Whitethroat she was saying to another girl in a different coloured jacket....as I passed she seemed to be trying to save face so asked me....yes, I said, Common Whitethroat (realising that as I had dropped the Common part this was what confused her)....the other girl was giving both of us the look of scepticism.....
Although Cuckoo had, apparently, appeared 12 days early this year, they had also undergone a freeze on the warbler front....so I'm guessing this was the first Whitethroat...er...Common Whitethoat....to arrive....the more experienced birder had not seen or heard it...and used the universal sceptical look....
