A visit to check out whats changed around the pits.....and the answer for birds...is not much really...
Found the female Mandarin Duck in the same woodland place as last year. 2 Lesser Whitethroat seemed intent on singing so maybe they have failed their first attempt?....cant think that they have got one brood off already!....
Other than that all the usual suspects were present.....5 Nightingale were still at it with one being constant. 30+ House Martin were with 25+ Swift over one of the pits with a few Swallow. The only warbler not to show or shout was Garden Warbler.....
Why is there always bad news to report....?
The farmer, intent on keeping this footpath clear (interesting that farmers cant be bothered with just about any footpath across their land, in particular when they plough!).....
So the farmer wants to maintain some access to a gate....rarely used....two choices then....maybe just a four foot wide strip to allow people to walk along?....or just one cut wide enough for his truck and or tractor....doh....he decided on the third option...well..his first and only I suspect...
How about a 25 foot wide cut everything to death option for about half a mile.....yep....Jack is no longer by the hedge.....Stitchwort isnt Great any more....and a whole host of other plants, Nettles, Umbellifers....the flight season is still at its height and it was along this corridor that was guranteed Orange Tip Butterfly....but not now....Jack by the Hedge (Garlic Mustard) and Purple Ground Ivy are two of its food plants, both thrived here....not any more....Jack also being important for the larva.....
Good grief!
