Wechter/Wechter.....though more known by Herb Alpert....!
And...not a flea at all really....its a weevil....
.....you hear the stories of people buying items from supermarkets, getting them home and finding...some kind of deadly foreign thing inside....heres my not quite so deadly supermarket catch....
Phyllobius pomaceus
The cherries are from Spain.....I know....cherries at the side of the road are better....indeed they are...but....we had run out at home and as I was going to the shop I happened to see these....so I thought that as a fill till the next road side purchase.....
I happened to get a cherry out at home and hey presto...whats that?.....and what if its Spanish?....do I kill it as cant release it in to the wild of the UK....
However....upon looking it up its Phyllobius pomaceus, found here in Britain. And im guessing Spain as it was sealed in the packaging...and its also a young weevil...because its green....they then lose this colour as they age....
They can be abundant around stinging nettles...so as we have some in the garden....off it went......!
A classic example of how some bugs get into the country. I see on the news last night that huge acreages of Sweet Chestnut are currently being cut down due to some bug from abroad that is now damaging them.
