Ah....theres a song in there somewhere from way back when and im probably not allowed to say who its by....!
Ragged Robin, Lychnis flos-cuculi
It was nice to see the Ragged Robin out today. One of my favourite plants and it only grows in one spot on site that I have found.
Flaming June!! Though not so flaming today.
0430 - 0715, bright, cool, WSW f1-3 variable
All the usual birds present....reported to Kentos....5 Nightingale singing or croaking, 2 Mandarin, 5 Swift, 1 Grey Wagtail, 2 Turtle Dove.
One Lesser Whitethroat will get a mention here as it was the only one I found today and was great to hear all be it briefly. Its also the one bird I thought would not remain on site due to its location compared to others this year and in the past. Still...shows what I know I suppose.
And a mention for Linnet...great to hear...yes, in the bright sunshine of Madeira (see previous post) a male looked grand....a small group today all looking rather marvelous too! And sounding lovely.
And a bird I like to champion. Its difficult....Garden Warbler. As a ringer you get to see all the colours of a bird in the hand that rarely shine in the field...and this is one of them. Yes, I know....Sylvia borin...the boring bird...but for me at least its a bird I love to see, as they can be hard to catch up with in the field, and to hear.....
I will mention the birds on the water as they are the main reason I go there I guess...and its WeBS next week!
Mallard, Moorhen, Mute Swan (plus 4 juveniles), Great Crested Grebe (plus 2 juveniles), Grey Heron, Mandarin Duck, Coot, Little Grebe, Herring Gull, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Greater Black-backed Gull, Black Headd Gull, Tufted Duck, Greylag Geese, Canada Geese.
