Recondite Warbler.....

We all hear them....its the seeing...

I tried to cover most of the site today in search of warblers......THE best time of year is here....late April and May....warblerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr time.................

I suppose when I retire...if my legs will allow it....I will spend every day on site avoiding jobs at home...heh heh....

0515 - 0810 Dull, overcast, light drizzle on-off, brightening, SW f1-3 variable.

Without further ado....

Warbler count:

pyit pyut 34
Blackcap 15
Whitethroat 21
Willow Warbler 2
Garden Warbler 2
Lesser Whitethroat 3
Nightingale 13
Reed Warbler 5
Sedge Warbler 2

Arriving on site I was met with the best dawn chorus so far of the year.  Its building....and this morning was full of Blackbirds and Robins and....hmmmm.....whats that......ooooooh....Lesser Whitethroat within 100m of the car....cooooooooooooooooool.......(am I allowed to say that as a birder...I mean, clearly im not cool in any way as a birder, I know that much!)

What a great way to start...Lesser Whitethroat....the heady, eye-popping song of the recondite warbler.

Who cares if, yet again, the 'incontrovertible' Met Office were...er...contradictious of their own offerings....dry, nice morning leading to cloudy, wet pm.  A about F...Plan B....

Other:

Blackbird, Robin, Wren, Great Tit, Blue Tit, Treecreeper, Woodpigeon, Song Thrush, Magpie, Linnet, Chaffinch, Skylark, Reed Bunting, Dunnock, Jackdaw, Green Woodpecker, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Yellowhammer, 4 Swallow, 1 Sand Martin, 8 House Martin, Sparrowhawk, Stock Dove, Pied Wagtail, Goldfinch, Kestrel, Feral Pigeon, Starling, Mistle Thrush, Collared Dove.

Finally....I am no longer a Martin free zone....!!....with each new bird on the list I find it a relief...something lifted....

On the pit:

Moorhen, Canada Goose, Mallard, Coot, Grey Heron, Great Crested Grebe, Lesser Black Back Gull, Mute Swan, Tufted Duck, Little Grebe, 3 Mandarin Duck, Snipe.

  1. I can only dream of such a Warbler count here Graham, your Nightingale count outstrips all my Warblers put together! Not surprising though, as the habitat here has been trashed so much over the years :-(
