Some areas I only visit in spring and summer for migrants....
...this is one of them on the northern side of the site.....
On site at 0500....just a few Blackbirds singing and the occasional Robin....the main thrust of song commenced at 0516 today....
As it was early and few other birds singing...and little traffic noise....I could hear a distant Nightingale....when I got to the paddocks it was obvious that there was at least one new bird over at the quarry....
Todays count….
Nightingale 8
Whitethroat 2
Lesser Whitethroat 1
Cettis Warbler 2
Reed Warbler 2
Willow Warbler 2
...as usual plenty of Blackcaps and Chiffchaffs around....
Across North Field Skylarks and Meadow Pipits called and sang.....
A Tawny Owl was calling from the eastern end of Long Strait...and a pair were up in the surrounding woodland of North Scrub....
Colts Foot....with friend....
A Whitethroat was having a good mumble with added scratches, so didn't sound quite right for a Garden Warbler....after a search I eventually found it attempting its impersonation....
Over on West Pit...the second record for Little Ringed Plover on site....I think this really shows the possibilities the pits holds with just a little work....sadly I didn't have my scope and the bird remained at some distance.....
Little Ringed Plover
3 Shelduck were also on West Pit....
Shelduck
The return journey was pretty uneventful until I reached the quarry area...2 Buzzards were calling...then there was a not quite right Kestrel call....a Buzzard flew past so I thought it may be the presence of the that that had made the Kestrel call....but it repeated it and it didnt sound quite right again.....as I was scanning up a woodpecker appeared....red cap....whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat!!!.....Lesser Spotted Woodpecker...what a result.....daily visiting a site really does pay off,,,,
