So....not having been to the pits for a little while....and not much over the summer months I thought I would have a quick meander to see if anything was around.....and what has or is happening on site...
This sign is at the now ex stile by the entrance to the pits.....
…..and this is the sign on the official looking gate they have installed....
….er….however....official as it seems to enter the pits all you have to do is walk round the left hand side of it.....
They have cleared the site more thoroughly now....not too sure where these ASDA trolleys came from.....but that sure is a long way to wheel one...!!
It looks as if they haven't done too much driving along the pits though....as the bramble I now beginning to encroach over the road....
What was around....several Chiffchaffs still singing and many more 'wheet-wheeting'....joined by Blackcaps 'chak-chaking' and a couple occasionally singing though somewhat briefly.
I found a Whitethroat and a Sedge Warbler as well but not any other warblers around this morning in the mostly gloom of the misty start.....it surely is Autumn!....
This Purple Loosestrife is at the west pit although there is quit a bit around the pits in general.....
Whilst at the west pit I decided to sit on the new bund....as I was sitting below the sky line of the new bund, not that it mattered too much with so much mist around....a helicopter flew over rather low and put up around 300 geese....Greylags and Canadas.....
Fleabane
Talking of birds....this isn't one....however....im pretty sure its Redshank....
Redshank
Also in the gloom two juvenile Great-crested Grebes were continuing to harass their parents for food...its a long parenting season for these birds and the constant begging must get rather wearing...
Whilst at the west pit I decided to sit on the new bund....as I was sitting below the sky line of the new bund, not that it mattered too much with so much mist around....a helicopter flew over rather low and put up around 300 geese....Greylags and Canadas.....and this odd one out.....
Whilst sitting and waiting for the mist to rise a bit I was fortunate enough to have a close pass by of a Hobby which then headed for a tree I have found them in previous years and called for a while before falling silent.….
And this is the bund I was sitting on....now that the flowers...or weeds....have moved in and making it look a bit more respectable things are looking up....over the next couple of years it should hopefully get much better....
Of course, what this also means is that the viewing points I have used for the pits are gradually closing in. Without management, I haven't done any since the new plans for the pits was revealed, it will soon be a wall of Willow with limited viewing. Trying to look at this positively it will shelter the birds from passing traffic and human contact, leaving them potentially in peace. This will be most important over the winter period when all the ducks arrive to over-winter on site.
