Return to the Home(Whet)sted

1030 - 1300 Cold......very cold....overcast, ENE f2-4

Well, we've all seen the snow and here are a few more pics....out of the bitter wind it wasn't too bad....but....brrrrr....!!!!

Lots of ice on the pits today....and lots of snow everywhere.....

Most of the streams were still running....but here at one of the junctions the ice had set in....

The puddles had disappeared...

East pit had mostly frozen over with a small amount of water at the western and southern edge...but out on the ice birds were roosting.....including....

....2 Lapwing

Other than the Lapwing and a few Black-headed Gulls there was nothing to be seen....

East pit

Most birds had retreated to Island pit as it offered most shelter from the cold wind and also the most amount of open water....

Out there somewhere were about 70 Shoveler, 3 Goldeneye, a dozen Gadwall, 2 Pochard...2 Mandarin Ducks flew off....

Middle pit....

....all was quiet.....apart from a handful of gulls...

Nothing stirred out on the south fields though I did hear a brief Skylark call....

South fields....

Out on West pit a few birds were braving it in the western corner....including a Snipe on the north shore.....

Posible bird of the day.......Short-eared Owl....at West pit....couldn't relocate it to confirm but I'm 90% sure.....will need to go back and find it.....hopefully.....
