1335-1445 SE breeze, hazy/overcast, some sun, warm
An afternoon stroll with my son was required, so I decided to walk across to the gravel pits from Five Oak Green, something I havent done for a while now I usually use the shorter way in off the main Maidstone Road.
Crossing the fields there was plenty of Corvid species action...I counted at least 500 birds, mostly Jackdaws with a good number of Crows and some Rooks present. In among them were the inevitable Woodpigeons. The fields have all been ploughed, hence the congregation of birds....though I was hoping for a stray Wheatear...sadly none showed...well...maybe next time.
A quick stop at the gravel pit with the 'sand bar' where the water is now low enough to allow birds to roost. On it today was a single Grey Heron, 15 Black Headed Gull, though 25 were around this pit perched in various places. 2 Herring Gulls and 8 Lesser Black-backed Gulls were also present. Highlight was the Common Tern that was continually flying along the pit and diving, then returning to the same end, the western end, to fly in to the wind and do some more diving for, I assume, small fish.
Ive been scanning the skies here for a Common Tern to add to my year list, but no luck yet :-)
