...first I have heard of it...so a bit late really.....though I was out ringing so I heard the chorus on the day....I wonder who makes up all these 'days' on the calender?
.....for me it would be Garden Warbler Day....
0520 - 0830 Cold, warming later, foggy clearing gradually
When I went ringing yesterday I left the house at 0400 and dawn was cracking then!....birds started singing around 0430....so I missed dawn by some margin today...and it seemed a funny day, maybe it was the weather today?...
There certainly seemed to be a lack of singing today, maybe it was the fog. As I left Five Oak Green for my jaunt across to the pits - Blackbird, Song Thrush,, Robin, Collared Dove, Starling, Wren, Dunnock - I could see the fog hanging heavy over the orchard - Woodpigeon, Crow, Chaffinch, Green Woodpecker, Pied Wagtail, Great Tit.
Off across the fields - Skylark, Grey Wagtail - approaching the pits - Blackcap, Chiffchaff, Lesser Whitethroat, Whitethroat - and at the pits.....
...this, sadly, isnt some distant view...its about 20'...if you can spot the gravel pit you will be doing well....so there wouldnt be any wildfowl count today!
Gradually the fog would clear to allow some views.....
Coot, Cuckoo, Greylag Geese, Magpie, Great Crested Grebe, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Blue Tit, Mute Swan, Linnet, Feral Pigeon, Nightingale, Willow Warbler, Mallard, Tufted Duck, Jay, Garden Warbler, Heron, Sedge Warbler, Reed Warbler, Canada Goose, Long Tail Tit, Moorhen.
Hmmm...maybe the birds had worn themselves out yesterday with all that singing for the public at large, maybe it was the weather...but it all seemed a little half hearted...so I was left a bit disappointed, especially by the Nightingales which were firstly lacking in numbers compared to last year and only occasionally bothering to sing (possibly due to the lack of numbers....!?)....though even the Chiffs and Blackcaps werent too interested....the real star today was Garden Warbler song and views....
Anyway...first...a picture to cheer the day along....

Far fewer summer birds here than over at the pits Graham, but the few that are here aren't singing much either!
