Nightjar...or not....

Went to Broadwater Warren (over in Sussex!!) last Saturday evening to try for Tree Pipit, Woodlark and Nightjar.  I bumped in to Alan Loweth and discussed the new clearing on the Groombridge side of the site where there has been good activity compared with the usual area I visit on the Tunbridge Wells side where it has been very sporadic. I managed reasonable views of Woodlark but failed with Tree Pipit.
I then went off to meet some friends, Ron Clark and Gerry Balcikonis, and we returned to site.
After arriving back on site we had even better views of Woodlark, flying up and singing well not too far away, so this was a good start.  Failed again to get Tree Pipit though.  Maybe next time.  The two things against us was the time of day, getting on toward dusk and, surprise surprise....the weather....it was blowing a gale and very cool.
The last two years i've visited the site, this time of year on warm, balmy evenings, I have succeeded with Nightjar both times with fantastic views even in the gloom!!...however, this time we failed to even get any 'churring' at both sides of the site.
We did, however, get Glow Worm, the first sighting this year at Broadwater.

  1. Woodlark is always a nice bird to but shame on the Tree Pipit front and the Nightjar.I couldn't find Tree Pipit at Bedgebury this year either. You asked about the moths at Sissinghurst, we are at least 20 species down if not more! this week has been an improvement though, we might struggle to get near to 300 species this year, last year was poor and we reached around 330 from memory. All the best Alan
