Here we go, here we go.....

A start, of sorts....I thought I had better get this going sooner rather than later and as I moved to Pembury in August 2012 I thought that January 2013 was a good time to start a blog about a local bird spot.
I havent had a lot of time to get out and about really to see whats around.  Ive spoken to a few birders and looked at the KOS site but information seems hard to come by here in Kent, a bit of a tightlip county so far.  KOS sightings seem mostly to come from the North Kent coastal area, which is fair enough as there are certainly plenty of birds there and I will visit at some point.
One thing is for sure, theres plenty more Waxwing sightings around here than where I used to live on the Sussex coast!  And thats what made me choose this area to go-a-looking for birds, a report of Waxwings.  No, I didnt see them, very disappointing.  It seems to be a bit of a bogie bird here in the UK (Ive ringed them in Canada - amazing in the hand!)
Having looked at a OS Map there seemed a reasonable amount of footpaths and potentially different habitats, meaning different birds.
A nice large orchard with flocks of Fieldfares and Redwings, great!  A couple of very large, open arable fields, a few gravel pits, Whetsted Gravel Pits, (no longer used and mostly undisturbed), a bit of woodland and then the, probable, northern boundary, the Medway.  All this nicely between Five Oak Green and Golden Green....
P.S. I know theres another birder (retired) from Golden Green visiting the area so he knows more of whats going on than me.  He also made me aware that an RSPB person counts the area now and then, though im unsure how often.
